“On Utah’s Northern Ute reservation, as of 2014 there were at least 162[6] wells that hadn’t produced oil and gas for at least 10 years,[7] according to an InvestigateWest analysis of data obtained by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility under the Freedom of Information Act. Forty percent had been inactive for more than 20 years; one hadn’t produced any oil or gas since 1979. In the state of New Mexico, based on the limited available state data, as of July there were at least 206 inactive wells on tribal lands, which include the Jicarilla Apache Nation and parts of the Ute Mountain Ute, and Navajo Nations.
