Tim Caverly: Protecting Paradise

Tim Caverly was a ranger with the Maine Department of Conservation for 32 years. During his last 18 years with the department, he was Regional Supervisor for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. In trying to preserve the wilderness character of the Allagash, Tim ran afoul of a powerful state legislator pushing for more motorized access and other development on the river. As the Bureau of Parks and Lands succumbed to political pressure, Tim’s efforts to fight for the Allagash grew more and more difficult, and in 1999 he was dismissed from his position. With the help of PEER, he reached a settlement with the department and left the agency. He served for a number of years as the Director of Maine PEER, and now is an author and educator who gives presentations around the state of Maine.
