Matt Chew: Free Speech With A Price

Matt was an Arizona States Parks employee specializing in natural resource preservation. He wrote an essay about the famous Kartchner Caverns entitled “A Theme Park Grows beneath the Ground”, which discussed the trade-offs inherent between high human visitation and natural places. Three days after it was published in the Boston Globe, the State Parks Director ordered him fired because the piece brought “discredit and embarrassment to the State."

PEER lawyered up and quickly got him reinstated. Shortly thereafter, he had us reveal that the state historic preservation officer was carving her initials on century old adobe walls.

Matt returned to academia where he occasionally alerts PEER to the blinders worn in the almost ideological holy war against invasive species.
